Preparation
Most of us spend our lives preparing for something, whether it be a job, a meal, a class, a spouse, whatever. Today, I encountered questions from my six year old for which I was not wholly prepared. My son is studying dinosaurs in kindergarten right now, and as we rode home he began to ask me some questions about dinosaurs. As a biology major and science teacher (for eleven years) you would think that I would be able to answer these questions with ease. His first question was "What killed all of the dinosaurs?". Well, I really shed some light on the issue with the answer "I don't know." It was not a very a very good answer and not what he was looking for, but it was an honest answer. I have been restling with creation and evolution for years without coming to an ultimate conclusion. Thankfully, my son directed the conversation back to something unequivocally confirmed in the Bible. He began to talk of the sovreignty of God and the God's judgment of sin. He said, "God must have sent that meteor at the dinosaurs because they were not doing things that made Him happy." While not stating it explicitly he seemed to understand God's sovreignty over all and God's judgment of sin. His theology did need a little tweeking as he then proceeded to talk about the destruction and death in the wake of last spring's tornadoes in terms of the sinfulness of those who were killed. I had the opportunity to explain that God allows bad things to happen to his children at times because we are all under the curse of sin. By the end of the ride we had talked about some pretty heady stuff. God allowed us to move from a kindergarten question that I was not able to answer to a discussion of vital issues that are clearly laid out in Scripture. Thank God for His sovreignty and grace to me and my children. My son ended our conversation with another profound question: "Daddy, why does Jimmy Graham play for the Saints?" Man, I love my kids.
